'Govt frowns on child brides'

KUALA LUMPUR: Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has reiterated that the government is against child marriages.
"Our stand is quite clear... that we are against child marriages."
Speaking to reporters after the opening of the Women's Summit 2010 yesterday, she said however, that if such a marriage took place according to the provisions of the Syariah law, then it is within the ambit of the law.
Shahrizat said the Syariah law states that those aged 15 and below must obtain the permission of the court.
Shahrizat said this when she was asked to comment on the marriage of a 14-year-old schoolgirl to a 23-year-old religious school teacher in July.
Teenager Siti Maryam Mahmod and her husband Abdul Manan Othman were among 250 couples who participated in a 1Malaysia mass wedding ceremony at the Federal Territory mosque last Saturday.
"Our view is that she has got the consent, but nevertheless, my legal adviser is looking into the case.
"I am looking into this issue seriously because as a matter of policy, whether for Muslims or non-Muslims, we are not for child marriages."
Currently, Muslim girls below the age of 16 can marry only with the Syariah Court's consent, while non-Muslim girls between 16 and 18 can wed only with the authorisation of the menteri besar or chief minister.

ReplyDeleteIn all fairness, everyone has a point to make and I personally found each point reasonable, except for the sweeping thought that child marriage amounts to paedophilia. Unless it is a common practice that child marriages take place without the consent of both families, the generalisation is a tad unfair. But without the consent, such marriages won’t materialise in this country.
